Osage Nation SWAT Youth gather for Leadership Summit IV
August 02, 2009
SWAT youth from Osage County and Creek County gathered for the annual Youth Leadership Summit at Camp McFadden in Ponca City, OK for a weekend of teambuilding, learning, and planning. Positive leadership skills were taught to youth for them to take back to their community and share with other SWAT youth. We are looking for exciting SWAT Teams in Pawhuska, Hominy, Shidler, Skiatook, and Sperry. We were happy to have the Mounds SWAT group join us and know they are ready for an exciting year to begin.
SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) is a youth led organization that helps to educate other youth and the community about how the tobacco companies are targeting youth and the dangers of commercial tobacco. Our SWAT Youth learn how to be leaders and how to share a healthy, positive message with their peers and community members. We really appreciate Hominy SWAT youth, Shabraya Malone and Hannah Brave for serving on the planning and implementation committee. These two youth exemplified what true leadership is about and what the SWAT program teaches.
27 youth attended the annual SWAT Youth Leadership Summit on July 31st through August 2nd. Motivational speakers were Sheri Kincaid, Joey Stone, Lisa Vaden, Maureen Wright, Jessica Davis, Chelsie Frost, Craig Walker, Kathleen Boe, Tom Nave and Treva Gilkey. Gail Boe and Bob Vaden made sure the youth were well feed with healthy snacks and meals. We appreciate Shanda Hart for her hard work in keeping the lodge organized and tidy.
Some of the sessions were “Getting Your Message Out With Style, Say It Loud, Say It Proud: Motivation Rocks!, SWAT – What It Is!!!, A Leader Is What A Leader Does!, Low Ropes Course, Sun’n Fun and various Team Building activities. SWAT youth expressed their excitement about the activities, one youth quoted, “Everything I’ve seen was super great! Sun ‘n Fun was a Great Bonus, Can’t wait for next year’s summit!”
