Principal Chief John D. Red Eagle gave the prayer and opening remarks to the children who attended the “Week of the Young Child” event in Pawhuska on April 25.
The event, which celebrates children in second grade and younger, was attended by children from area public schools, Osage Nation Head Starts and the Wah Zha Zhi Early Learning Centers.
Sponsored by the Osage Nation Child Care Department, the event included three shows by child entertainer Monty Harper at the Constantine Theater and extended outside with inflatables, arts, crafts, games, exhibits, a petting zoo, snow-cones, cultural activities and a live outdoor show by Safari Joe and his reptiles.
Osage Nation Child Care Department Director Russell Mashunkashey said the event had been attended by over 600 children. “I want to thank the 60 or more volunteers from the Osage Nation, Tri-County Tech in Bartlesville and my staff Katie Swan, Shana Walker and Chief Red Eagle for their help and commitment to making this event successful with record attendance,” Mashunkashey said.
