EVENT: "Frybread for Addie" Book Signing at the Osage Tribal Museum
DATE(s): Saturday March 09, 2013
TIME(s): 11:00 a.m.
DEPARTMENT: museum

The Osage Tribal Museum will be hosting a book signing March 9th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.  This exciting, upcoming event features Osage author Mindy Standley of the children’s book “Frybread for Addie” and Osage illustrator C. R. Red Corn.

Standley grew up with her family participating in I’Lon-Schka.  She also learned traditional cooking from her mother, Debbie Atterberry.  Valuing our culture and her heritage so much, Standley used her education in broadcast journalism to interview tribal elders and explore ways to bridge the gap between generations.

Red Corn grew up in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, attending school at Indian Camp.  He began drawing at age 6, and has taken his aspirations to an accomplished height as an artist and illustrator.  When he is not working on a project, he volunteers at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital where he draws portraits for veterans.

“Frybread for Addie” demonstrates bringing the culture of Standley’s own grandmother to young readers and presenting the work of a local Osage artist.  Come join us at the book signing as we celebrate the presentation of “Frybread for Addie”.

We will travel to Missouri to experience and appreciate the region’s cultural history related to the Osage people. Heritage sites are very often associated with oral tradition and origin stories, trails or pilgrimage routes, gathering and offering areas, habitation sites with structure, artifacts, petroglyphs or pictographs, observatories and sacred calendar sites, among other types of culturally important places.

The trip will take place Monday, March 18th through Friday, March 22nd. We will visit Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Big Mound, Sugarloaf Mound, the East St. Louis sites, and Washington State Park. The Cahokia Mounds site is one of only 25 World Heritage Sites within the United States. This is an outdoor event and some activities will require walking on forest trails.  Please bring clothing and shoes appropriate for hiking in cool weather. We have chartered a bus for the trip and will be staying in a downtown hotel in St. Louis. We will provide all meals for the entirety of the trip. The trip is limited to 25 Osage Constituents, 18 years or older. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration packet is available at the following link: Registration Packet
